I was driving past the mobile home dealerships near the airport recently, when this bit of orange boxy cuteness caught my eye:
It turns out that Clayton Homes in Austin is now selling these fun, modular structures that work like modern home puzzle pieces. They have several versions of this orange unit (“Flex”), which contains a variety of bedroom, bathroom, and flex room options. This would make a fantastic backyard studio for a certain interior designer…
They also sell these butterfly-roofed “I-House” homes:
Both the Flex homes and I-House units are designed to work in tandem with each other. The I-home is available in 723 sf and 1023 sf versions and contains the kitchen, laundry, and master bedroom. Flex homes run between 268 and 620 sf.
The kitchen features Ikea-like cabinetry, subway tiles, windows in the backsplash, and stainless appliances. The only thing I didn’t like were the acrylic countertops.
The laundry is brilliantly situated inside the master closet, with doors leading to both the master bedroom and the bathroom. I can’t imagine the convenience of hanging up my clothes right out of the dryer instead of schlepping them all over the place.
The I-House includes several eco-oriented options, such as tankless water heaters, solar panels, and a rainwater collection systems running through the middle of the butterfly roof:
Recycled decking materials are used to connect multiple units and for the rooftop deck on Flex:
There’s another deck off the Scandinavian-styled master bedroom:
Privacy-height windows flood the hallway with light:
Standard features include Andersen Low-E windows and doors, dual-flush toilets, no V.O.C. paint, and programmable thermostats.
You can check out a bunch of different configurations online here. If you head over to Clayton Homes in Austin, be sure and ask for Steve Ittner, who gave me the grand tour. You can also email him at steve.ittner@clayton.net.
