Our Design Star Season 6 cast critique continues with Miami designer, Mark Diaz, and I’m getting more and more psyched about the upcoming season after checking out his portfolio!  I now have five finalists on my list of faves…you can see why:

OMG, looove the wallpaper and the faux dog.  That’s some high drama there, without having to be over-the-top crazy about it.  The room still looks sophisticated and chic.  Would love a rug, but that’s my only beef.

Fun!  Like the vintage stuff in modern surroundings.  Love all of the honeyed textural tones.

I like this striped backdrop anyway, but if the brown stripes are actually woodgrain, even better!  Love the color palette in this room and the casual, playful feeling.  Am thinking Mark is anti-rug in general…

Clean, sleek.  I love how the lines in the cabinetry just look like geometry instead of doors or drawer fronts.

Swank!  A tad on the goth side, but I like the mix of patterns.

This makes two Season 6 finalists who’ve featured a row of Ikea vintage-styled frames in their portfolio (Doug Hines used them in a restaurant dining room).  Gawd bless Ikea. This room is extravagant but fun. I imagine four X-Rays sitting in the chairs.

Love the wallpaper.

I feel relaxed just looking at this room.  That, and the anticipation of pampering.  Doesn’t this inspire you to book a facial?

Superchic.  Wondering what the big hole cut out of the column is.

The drama!  The pizazz!

You know how I love a good, boxy house!

Very sophisticated.  Slightly clinical.

Gorgeous.  Toilet’s a little contrived, though.

Inventive use of bicycle gears and Edison bulbs!

Another crazy light fixture!  This chandelier’s made out of brass knuckles–would you ever have guessed??  Love the idea of something associated with violence being turned into something that feels delicate and bubbly.

MARK DIAZ ON A BUMPER STICKER: Mark’s wheelhouse seems to be bold, dramatic design, which is exactly what you need in a television designer.  His portfolio rates right up there for me, so could we have a 5-way tie?  I’m anxious to see if he has on-camera charisma.

Coming soon: We’ll check out Chicago finalist Meg Caswell!
