Brooklynite Cathy Hobbs is the next finalist in our cast critique of HGTV’s Design Star, Season 6!
Actually, Cathy’s already the host of her own television design show–Metro Residential on New York’s WPIX—as well as a designer on HGTV Canada’s Top 10. As if that didn’t already make her a tough competitor, she’s won five New York Emmy awards for broadcast journalism, too. Unlike many Design Star alumni, the woman’s got the on-air thing down pat. Now let’s see if she has design chops as well…
I have glanced at this photo several times, and every time, I think there’s a window in the picture, so yay for the art creating an expanded sense of space. I’m also a fan of the Gus dining chairs.
I don’t just love this sectional sofa…I lust after it with every fiber in my being.
Love the grellow peeking out here and there, moving your eye around the space. I’m getting anal here, but the way the art is almost but not quite the same size irritates me, and this habit some designers have of putting a flat short-pants-looking throw at the foot of the bed looks awkward too. Otherwise, this bedroom looks cozy and classic, yet modern. The pops of color keep this neutral room from appearing boring.
A rug would make this adorable girl’s room perfect.
Urban. Chic. Conservative, but sophisticated. Love the mirror in the dining area.
So far, no major missteps. Can this crazy trend continue??
Uh. Muh. Gawd.
Just when I thought Cathy might have a problem being too conservative, I’m feasting my eyes on this to-die-for office design. This is how you do white…pair it up with superbright color! Love.
Love this bedding, but I don’t feel like the design of this room was pushed far enough. Charcoal paint on the walls and a bright yellow bolster pillow would’ve done just the trick.
This photo proves that you can create a mature, traditional space that doesn’t look old and frumpy. Dying for some art on the lefthand wall, but other than that, this room is perfect.
Everything in this bedroom is beautiful. Beautiful! Not getting a daybed next to a bed, though.
Okay, Cathy…where can I get the Threeballin’ (not to be confused with Freeballin’) vase/sculpture thingy next to the fireplace? Want.
I’m not a fan of oversized coffee table accessories because they only look good for photos. Can you imagine trying to talk around that enormous ivy-filled birdcage when you had a guest over? Odd. And speaking of unrealistic, I’d love to see someone trying to sit down at a sofa with coffee table sitting three inches away from it. I hate rooms that are overstyled for camera view vs. everyday use…it’s one of my pet peeves. I do see my favorite (so far) office design peeking out from the hallway, so I will give this room a pass.
CATHY HOBBS ON A BUMPER STICKER: Unless Cathy turns into Designerilla in a competition environment, I don’t see how she can be beat. I know I’ve only checked out three of the twelve designers, but I will go ahead and lay some money down on Cathy taking top honors. After all, HGTV has already groomed her in the minors!
Coming soon: We’ll check out finalist Doug Hines’ work next!
